AYURVEDA SELF CARE DURING COVID 19
Across the Globe, the world is suffering from the grips of the Pandemic COVID 19. The most unfortunate fact about the disease is that a solid treatment protocol or a cure is not yet confirmed. The age-old science, Ayurveda can do wonders in this scenario by increasing your immunity. The classical text of Ayurveda 'CHARAKA SAMHITA’ has mentioned about ‘JANAPADODHWAMSA VYADHIS’ in its ‘Vimana Sthana’. ‘Janapadodhwamsa Vyadhis’ in simple terms means diseases that cause the destruction of a community. It is also explained in the chapter that if proper medication administration is done which prevents the vitiation of ‘Doshas’, one need not be afraid of the illness. The Acharya also explains the importance of hygiene measures and to keep our surroundings clean. Enhancing the immunity of the body is crucial to be healthy.
The AYUSH ministry of India has advised few self-care guidelines for boosting immunity with special reference to respiratory health.
Drink warm water throughout the day
Daily practice of Yogasana, Pranayama and meditation for at least 30minutes.
Spices like Turmeric, Cumin, Coriander and Garlic are recommended in cooking.
Take Chyawanprash 10gm in the morning. Diabetics should go for the sugar-free option.
Drink herbal tea/decoction made from Basil, Cinnamon, Black pepper, Dry ginger and raisin - once or twice a day. Add Jaggery or fresh lime juice to your taste if needed.
Golden milk made of half teaspoon turmeric with 150ml hot milk once or twice a day.
Nasal application: Apply sesame oil/coconut oil/ Ghee in both the nostrils in morning and evening.
Oil pulling Therapy: Take 1 tablespoon sesame oil / Coconut oil in the mouth. Do not drink, Swish in the mouth for 2 to 3 minutes and spit it off followed by a warm water rinse. This can be done once or twice a day.
During dry cough/ sore throat: Steam inhalation with fresh mint leaves or Caraway seeds can be practised once a day.
Clove powder mixed with natural sugar/ honey can be taken 2 - 3 times a day in case of cough or throat irritation.
These measures generally treat dry cough and sore throat. However, it is best to consult a doctor if the symptoms persist.
PS: It is better to take Chyawanprash only after considering the digestive Power. You can seek the help of an Ayurveda doctor.
Social distancing, wearing a mask and the 20 second-hand wash is to be followed religiously.
Ayurveda is a lifestyle. The concepts of ‘Dinacharya’ and ‘Ritucharya’ helps a person to lead a healthy and blissful life. Links to my previous blogs regarding few ‘Dinacharya’ are given below.
